Jamie is a Wellington based artist with a main focus on figurative painting. This subject I find the most exciting and challenging. In my work I attempt to create a lively sense of the form of the figure.
Drawing on the classical nude Jamie Mackman contemporises the genre, creating stark and sometimes confronting imagery, causing the viewer to question their own identity.
It’s not the norm for a New Zealand household to have a large nude hanging on their wall. “I challenge this notion by addressing friends and myself in vulnerable and personal representations of the ‘everyman’”.
Jamie has intimate knowledge of her subjects, and therefore represents them with the care and dexterity of a friend or a lover, making them a biographical record, yet allowing the viewer to form their own opinion of the person.
